Hi, I'm Alan.

I’m a machine learning
and software engineer.

Based in Melbourne, currently looking for my next role. If you’re hiring, let’s chat :D

Experience

Professional Work

I’ve been working in ML and software since 2022. A bit of research, a bit of web development, and a lot of things I didn’t expect to be doing when I started. Here are the places I’ve worked.

  • I spend half my time explaining AI to humans, and the other half explaining humans to code. I work with companies to apply technology where it actually provides value. Most of the time it’s AI (I’m known for it lol). So far that’s included subtitling for 1,000+ hours of video across 10 languages, an AEMO energy trading system, and a POS and kiosk platform.

A Few Things I’ve Built

AI subtitling
1,000+ hours of video across 10 languages, with 20+ people reviewing the output.
Energy trading
An AEMO dispatch scheduling system using mathematical optimisation and ML.
POS & kiosks
A custom platform for a food and beverage operator serving 1,000+ customers a day across 3 locations.
Speaking

Talks

Sometimes I get invited to talk about ML. These are the talks I’ve given so far.

  1. Alan presenting Physics-Informed Neural Networks at DDD Melbourne

What I do

Things I Work On

Most of my experience is in machine learning, but I also build web apps and have worked on embedded systems. Working in small teams has meant doing a fair bit outside my job title.

  • I’ve built a subtitling platform using Claude, Gemini, GPT, and Deepgram, with people reviewing the output. I also built an LLM assistant used by 200 students daily.

  • Mostly Django: automating manual work, integrating payments, and building internal tools. I also handle deployment and cloud infrastructure.

  • Computer vision, time series, and physics-informed neural networks. I’ve worked on battery life prediction, wildfire detection, and modelling airborne microplastics. Mostly in PyTorch.

  • I’ve built pipelines for satellite imagery and models for emissions and land classification, using tools like Rasterio, GeoPandas, Spark, and AWS.

  • At Lux Aerobot, I built the balloon gondola hardware and firmware, and got computer vision models running on NVIDIA Jetson. There was a fair bit of fieldwork too.
